Why You Need a Parent-Centered Pregnancy Class

This is the class I wish I’d had when I was pregnant…

When I was pregnant (and maybe a little anxious about the impending most significant change in my life thing) I responded to this stress with my coping tactic of reading and research. My husband would say "Another pregnancy book?" whenever another one would appear.

I thought maybe, if I just knew enough facts, I could feel prepared. I thought maybe, if I could anticipate every possible thing that might go wrong, I could come up with a game plan.

Then I had the actual, real-life baby. With his own urgent needs and preferences that he was demanding I respond to right now. And the challenges we faced were completely different ones that I had worried and read about.

While I looked and looked for someone else to have the right answer, what I really needed was to know and trust that I already had what I needed inside. What my son needed was me. Wow, that realization was a trip.

Luckily, I had some tools to cling to as my life raft - I was fortunate that I'd already studied the Alexander Technique, and I used those skills again and again to calm myself as I soothed the baby, to help me a bit rest even when he wouldn't, and to value myself during that vulnerable postpartum time when everything became all about the baby.
